It seems that every vendor claims to be discounted airfares. For you to actually get the best possible rate, you will have to implement some search and verification skills to validate that it is the best.
Begin your search to find the best discount airfare by searching the sites that do cross comparisons of the most number of airlines. Online websites like the Kayak website or Sidestep, or CheapoAir, those sites really do most of the comparison work for you. Those sites use a process commonly called "deep linking" and therefore they search many, many more itineraries and airlines than others.
Still - the "deep linking" sites will often give you different rates, because various service fees are added which may be different on each site. These websites still save you the trouble of visiting each site individually and searching for best fares. So instead of checking site after site after site, you really just need to check 4. Check Cheapoair, Orbitz, Priceline and Expedia - as you check, notice that all three sites give different quotes for the same exact plane and itineray! But if you check those 3, you WILL find the lowest price. After many years of booking travel online for myself and others, I have ALWAYS found the lowest airfare in one of those 3.
You need to be persistent in your research to get the best deals, and you will need to check the 4 sites mentioned above because from my experience - the lowest fare will be found in one of those sites, every time. And of course, when you see an obviously great deal, take it fast -- because it will sell out quickly!
